Meet Archie! After moving back to Florida, Archie presented to TLC Animal Hospital for continued care of a previously removed tail mass. Given the lack of tissue that remained after the mass was removed, Archie’s owners were advised that his incision may not heal properly and be at a greater risk of infection. This was a major problem for sweet Archie and his happy tail!
Because the wound was so large, Dr. Tomasino decided to use organic honey to create a medium that limits bacterial growth, therefore acting as a natural antibiotic. In addition to the honey, Dr. Tomasino’s nurses performed a total of 9 laser treatments, which helped to increase blood flow and production of a healthy granulation bed. With the diligence and great cooperation from Archie’s humans, the wound started healing almost immediately.
The pictures below show the progression of Archie’s healing process. These photos may be graphic so please scroll down with caution.
**NOTE: The images dated 1/6/16 and 1/11/16 appear a much brighter red than the other images. This is what we call granulation tissue. Granulation tissue is healthy, viable tissue. This was exactly what we were hoping for with using honey and laser therapy!
